I am an independent scholar based in England.

The main focus of my previous research has been on human cultural evolution. My thinking in this area is captured most fully in my book, Cultural Evolution, and summarised more concisely in my paper, Natural and Artefactual Languages: A Mechanism for Cultural Evolution.

My first book about cultural evolution used the language of memetics. The Selfish Meme: A Critical Reassessment started life as the doctoral thesis that I wrote at Sheffield University's Philosophy Department under the supervision of George Botterill and Peter Carruthers. Before that, I read History and Philosophy of Science at Clare College, Cambridge University, where my final year dissertation, prepared under the supervision of Peter Lipton, concerned the relationship between mind and brain.

I also co-wrote and edited a very different book: Gifted Children: A Guide for Parents and Professionals.
